RAWALPINDI: A rain emergency has been declared in the catchment areas of Nallah Lai following torrential rainfall, with the water level in the nullah rising rapidly and authorities warning residents in nearby areas to move to safer locations.
Heavy rain has lashed Rawalpindi and Islamabad, bringing relief from the heat and humidity but raising concerns about urban flooding in low-lying areas.
According to the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), 131 millimetres of rain has been recorded across the twin cities. Rainfall recorded at different locations included 112mm in New Katarian, 75mm in Shamsabad, 50mm in Pirwadhai, 60mm in Saidpur, 106mm in Golra and 65mm at the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
Wasa officials said the water level in Nallah Lai at Katarian had risen to around 20 feet, while the level at the Gawalmandi Bridge reached 8 feet.
Authorities have warned that a major flood surge from Islamabad could enter Rawalpindi, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi Nadeem Nasir placed the relevant departments on high alert and directed residents living along Nallah Lai to shift to safer locations as a precautionary measure.
Rescue 1122 teams have also been deployed along Nallah Lai, while Wasa teams are monitoring the situation and remain present in vulnerable and low-lying areas.
Officials are closely monitoring the water level as further heavy rainfall in the catchment areas could worsen the situation.
