ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a public advisory warning citizens against the illegal sale, purchase and use of foreign SIM cards, citing serious security, privacy and legal risks.
In its advisory, the telecom regulator said unauthorised foreign SIM cards could expose users to identity theft, financial fraud, data breaches and other cyber security threats. It urged the public to refrain from purchasing or using such SIMs.
PTA advised citizens to obtain mobile connections only through authorised franchises and service centres and to ensure that every SIM is registered in their own name through biometric verification.
The regulator stressed that the use of unregistered or illegally obtained foreign SIM cards may lead to legal consequences and compromise the security of users’ personal and financial information.
PTA reiterated its commitment to ensuring a secure telecommunications environment and urged the public to comply with the country’s telecom regulations by using only legally registered mobile connections.
