Electricity consumers are likely to face higher bills for the next three months as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) considers a request to impose a quarterly tariff adjustment.
NEPRA has reserved its decision on an application filed by power distribution companies seeking approval to pass on a financial burden of Rs. 34 billion to consumers.
According to sources familiar with the matter, if approved, the adjustment will increase to Rs. 1.34 per unit. The additional charge will be applied for three consecutive months. Officials said the quarterly adjustment is aimed at recovering costs related to capacity payments, fuel price variations, and other expenses incurred by distribution companies during the previous quarter.
NEPRA stated that a final decision will be issued after a detailed scrutiny of the data and arguments presented by the distribution companies. The regulator will also take into account its impact on consumers before notifying the revised rates. The quarterly adjustment mechanism allows NEPRA to revise electricity prices every three months to reflect changes in actual costs, instead of making a large one-time increase in the base tariff.
