An important consultative meeting was held at the President’s Office under the chairmanship of President Asif Ali Zardari, in which the country’s economic situation, energy challenges, and the changing security situation of the region were discussed in detail.
This meeting was called in the context of global oil supply disruptions and rising prices of petroleum products to assess the impact on the country’s economy. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Defense Forces, specially attended the meeting. Apart from them, Deputy Prime Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Federal Interior Minister Senator Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Federal Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, Federal Minister for Energy and Petroleum Ali Pervez Malik, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, and Secretary to the Finance were also present.
The meeting closely examined the impact of fluctuations in oil and gas prices in the global market on the Pakistani economy, with all participants focusing on controlling inflationary pressures and ensuring energy security. The Federal Ministers of Finance and Petroleum briefed the participants on the ongoing measures to keep the prices of petroleum products stable and the impact of rising fuel prices on other sectors.
On this occasion, it was decided to strictly implement the austerity drive to reduce government expenditure and maintain fiscal discipline. The meeting also discussed the broader regional situation and its implications for Pakistan’s security, economic future, and food security. The meeting emphasized that a coordinated national response is needed to address these emerging challenges and that all policy decisions will be made in line with national stability and in line with the protection of the public interest.
The participants also stressed the importance of maintaining national consensus and strengthening coordination among institutions so that economic management, energy planning, and security issues are kept on the same page.
Finally, the meeting also highlighted the need to create awareness at the public level so that fuel consumption can be reduced, for which the public will be encouraged to use public transport and share ride systems, so that the burden on the country’s resources can be reduced.
