ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has stopped accepting new maternity cases, citing limited capacity following the loss of beds in its neonatal nursery.
PIMS Executive Director Rana Imran Sikandar confirmed the development while talking to a local news channel, saying the hospital could not accommodate patients beyond its available capacity.
He said the decision to refuse new maternity cases was taken because the hospital was already operating beyond its capacity.
According to the PIMS executive director, 15 beds in the hospital’s nursery were completely destroyed, reducing the total number of available beds from 50 to 35.
He said babies and other patients would be referred to hospitals in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to ensure they receive the required medical care.
Letters have also been sent to other hospitals regarding the referrals, while some babies have already been shifted to the Polyclinic, Rana Imran Sikandar said.
The hospital administration has said the capacity constraints are the main reason behind the temporary refusal to accept new maternity cases.
