ISLAMABAD: To curb the alleged misuse of flight duty for carrying cigarettes, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has introduced a new restriction for cabin crew members and warned of disciplinary action for violations.
According to a circular issued by PIA management, each cabin crew member can carry only one packet of cigarettes containing a maximum of 20 cigarettes during flight duties. Those crew members found carrying more than one packet or exceeding the limit of 20 cigarettes will face disciplinary action, including suspension or removal from flying duties, the circular added.
The management has also directed that cabin crew members be briefed about the new restriction before flights and instructed staff to ensure full compliance with the directive. It has been reported that this new decision was made following an incident involving five PIA cabin crew members travelling from Multan to Jeddah who were allegedly found carrying a large quantity of cigarette packets.
The PIA Human Resources department is currently investigating the matter. The issue was also raised at the parliamentary level. On September 11, the Senate Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges referred to a social-media report alleging cigarette smuggling from Multan Airport and expressed concern that such incidents could damage PIA’s reputation. The committee recommended disciplinary proceedings against the relevant PIA official in accordance with applicable rules and law.
