ISLAMABAD: Chairman of Pakistan’s national space agency, the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) Yousuf Khan has revealed that Pakistan’s first lunar rover, Jinnah-1, is expected to land on the Moon in 2028.

He said that the country was increasingly relying on its own satellites instead of European and Chinese systems.
Addressing an event marking World Space Week here, the SUPARCO chief said the annual programme plays an important role in introducing young people to space technology.

He said Pakistan’s space programme had made significant progress in recent years, with the country strengthening its satellite capabilities. According to Yousuf Khan, Pakistan launched its EO-1 satellite in January 2025, followed by two more satellites in July and October of the same year.

He said Pakistan currently has six Earth observation satellites providing support in various sectors, including agriculture, urban and development planning, and natural disaster management. Satellite technology is also being used to expand internet access and television coverage, he added.

The SUPARCO chairman said continued investment in space technology would help Pakistan develop stronger capabilities and expand the use of satellite-based services in different sectors.
