ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has urged Afghan Taliban government to take action against terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory, saying lasting peace in the region depends on addressing its security concerns.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Pakistan rejected recent Afghan Taliban statements that it said diverted attention from concerns over cross-border terrorism.

The ministry said Pakistan’s concerns were supported by international assessments, including a United Nations Security Council monitoring report and a US report covering January to March 2026.

According to the Pakistani statement, the US report said the Afghan Taliban continued to allow Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to operate from Afghanistan. It also linked Taliban support and greater freedom for the group to an increase in attacks against Pakistan, estimating the TTP’s strength at 4,000 to 6,000 fighters.

Pakistan said claims that Afghanistan lacked the capacity or intention to destabilise its neighbour did not address its concerns. The statement also referred to attempted cross-border infiltrations, casualties during counter-terrorism operations and the recovery of foreign-origin weapons from militant groups.

It further raised concerns over the alleged facilitation of terrorist organisations by Afghan Taliban officials, including officials in Kandahar, and called for credible explanations and verifiable action.

The ministry stressed that Pakistan’s security measures were aimed at terrorist threats rather than the Afghan people. It said both countries would benefit from a region free of terrorism.

Pakistan called on the Afghan Taliban government to end any tolerance, facilitation or support for terrorist organisations, including the TTP, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and their affiliates. It also demanded assurances that Afghan territory would not be used to plan, prepare or launch attacks against Pakistan.

The statement said Pakistan would continue taking necessary measures to protect its citizens, sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, it added that Islamabad remained open to responsible engagement based on mutual respect, verifiable commitments and concrete action against terrorist networks and cross-border infiltration.

Pakistan maintained that regional peace could only be achieved if its concerns about terrorism originating from Afghanistan were addressed through verifiable measures.
