PESHAWAR: Following a recent rise in petrol prices, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has announced a new government program providing Rs2,200 to every registered motorcycle owner in the province.

According to the Chief Minister, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa currently has around 1.4 to 1.6 million registered motorcycles. Under the new scheme, the provincial government will cover the cost of this financial relief entirely.

The announcement comes as a response to the federal government’s recent increase in petroleum prices. The Chief Minister criticized the hike, calling it equivalent to dropping a “petrol bomb” on the public, and urged federal authorities to reduce their extravagant expenses instead of passing the burden onto citizens.

He also assured that despite rising fuel costs, fares for the BRT public transport system will not increase, ensuring commuters are not affected.

Details on how the Rs2,200 will be delivered to motorcycle owners, whether via bank accounts or a program similar to Ehsaas, will be announced later.

Fact Check: Ogra terms social media claims of fuel price hike fabricated

Meanwhile, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) on Tuesday dismissed social media reports regarding a massive hike in the prices of petroleum products, terming them “completely baseless” and “fabricated.”

In an official statement, a spokesperson for the regulator clarified that no summary has been forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Office proposing an increase of Rs 73.40 in the price of petrol and Rs 84.95 in the price of diesel.

The spokesperson said that the claims circulating online have no connection with reality and urged the general public to disregard unverified information. The regulator reiterated that such news is false and aimed at creating unnecessary panic, advising citizens to rely only on official announcements regarding fuel pricing.
