ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued its monsoon outlook for the Hindu Kush, Karakoram and Himalaya (HKH) region, warning of an increased risk of flooding due to above-normal temperatures and accelerated glacier melt.
According to the PMD, northern parts of the country, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, are expected to receive near-normal monsoon rainfall during the season.
The department said temperatures across the Hindu Kush, Karakoram and Himalaya are likely to remain above average, increasing the pace of glacier and snow melt.
The combined impact of melting ice and seasonal rainfall could trigger flooding in vulnerable areas.
The PMD also warned that heavy rainfall may lead to landslides and mudslides in mountainous regions, while glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) remain a potential threat in high-altitude and environmentally sensitive areas.
In view of the flood risk, the department has advised residents living near rivers, streams and other water channels to remain vigilant and closely follow weather advisories issued during the monsoon season.
