LONDON: Late-night eating is a significant factor in the rise of the most common liver disease, as per research conducted by scientists.

Severe cases of liver diseases might cause pain and, eventually, death. However, the researchers have now pointed out one daily habit that could be a contributing factor to the most prevalent liver disease.

Late-night eating was found to be a significant contributor to this liver disorder in the UK through a medical study.

That is, according to Oxford University studies, night-time habits and metabolic alterations are factors that are most likely to cause fatty liver among obese individuals.

Around 600 million adults worldwide suffer from fatty liver disease, which is the most common liver disorder with a prevalence rate of about 40 percent. Deaths and cancer in the liver are some of the serious complications that can result from this disease, in addition to a heightened risk of heart disease.

The disease is closely related to being overweight and resistance to insulin, which together hasten the accumulation of fat in the liver.

Even though the disease may not give rise to pronounced symptoms and hence very early stages may be indistinguishable, researchers concluded that one of the main causes of fatty liver disease is the consumption of most daily calories at night.

The researchers suggested that poor nighttime metabolism is itself a cause of increased fat storage in the liver since the body’s metabolism does not work as effectively at night. Hence, with large portions being consumed during the night, metabolic functions become even more disrupted and fat accumulates in the liver.

In the morning, the body is less capable of responding to insulin when consuming starts and the liver is then producing more fat, while abdominal fat and muscle tissues are failing to process properly.

Interestingly, it was also noted that after patients had lost weight and liver fat had been reduced, their night-time metabolism had still not regained full function, indicating that night-time metabolism might be the main culprit for fatty liver recurrence.
