PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly has been summoned to convene at 10 a.m. on October 13 for the election of a new Chief Minister (CM), according to an official notification issued by the KP Assembly Secretariat.

The new session has been scheduled after the previous sitting was adjourned until October 20. The notification confirmed that the agenda will include the election of the new leader of the house.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has begun reaching out to other political parties to secure support for its nominee, Sohail Afridi, for the chief minister’s position. A PTI delegation met leaders of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) at the party’s headquarters to seek their backing.

Earlier, KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi confirmed that he had received Ali Amin Gandapur’s resignation as chief minister. The confirmation came a day after the Governor House initially denied receiving the resignation.

According to the KP Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Gandapur’s resignation had been sent earlier, and its acceptance was pending at the Governor House. On Saturday, Gandapur shared a handwritten copy of his resignation on Facebook, reaffirming that it had been formally submitted.

A spokesperson for the Governor House stated that the resignation was received around 2:30 p.m. and would be processed transparently in accordance with the Constitution and the law.

Following Gandapur’s resignation, PTI nominated Sohail Afridi as his successor. However, due to delays in the resignation’s acceptance, the party leadership opted to initiate a no-confidence motion in the provincial assembly to formally elect a new chief minister.

Earlier, PTI Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja, in a press conference in Peshawar, alleged that attempts were being made to obstruct a constitutional transition in KP through unconstitutional means, adding that the party was facing undue pressure.
