PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council (KPBC) has announced a complete boycott of court proceedings in the whole province as a protest against the civil judges’ new appointment policy.
As per the Bar Council, the KP Law Department has removed the two years of experience requirement for a lawyer who wants to become a civil judge. The newly issued policy allows them to become judges even if they have no legal background.
The Bar Council vehemently opposed this change, asserting that it violates the idea of judicial independence and may lead to the lowering of the quality and standards of the judiciary.
KPBC has called upon all lawyers to stop their court activities until the Law Department decides to take back its step.
The Council pointed out that they would not stop their demonstrations until the lawyers’ position is not weakened or the judiciary’s trust is not compromised.
This is a major confrontation between the legal fraternity and the provincial authorities over judicial appointments that may affect the situation of the ongoing court cases in the whole of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
