PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police’s K9 Unit has not only come but it has also played a crucial role in ensuring peace and security in the province with the help of its highly skilled dogs and the successful implementation of its various strategies, but also in the fight against terrorism and the protection of high-risk and sensitive areas.

The annual performance report of the K9 Unit reveals that the team was able to conquer remarkable heights in different areas despite the many obstacles it faced.

Zulfiqar Hamid, the IGP (Inspector General of Police) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is very pleased with the unit’s performance and has praised the professionalism and commitment of the officers together with their well-trained dogs. The K9 Unit was the leading factor in search operations during the year and was instrumental in the remarkable discovery of a huge cache of weapons and ammunition consisting of 64 SMGs, 2 LMGs, 13 repeaters, 202 pistols, 81 rifles, 2 Kalashnikovs, 4 rocket launchers, 240 shells, 2 IEDs, 7 hand grenades, and 4,532 cartridges.

K9 teams also performed security duties 1,185 times which means that the safety of VIPs, Foreign Nationals, and Chinese people in the province was assured. The securing of during the various operations like sensitive events, public gatherings, educational institutions, and religious assemblies among others was part of the unit’s activities. The unit’s highly trained dogs were at times the frontline in detecting the suspicious materials thus averted the potential threats.

Besides the fundamental security operations, K9 Unit also took part in snap checking, search and sweep operations, and ensuring the safety of large public events. Their efforts have been indispensable for the upholding of the security environment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
