ISLAMABAD: Senior journalist and security analyst Aqeel Yousafzai is reportedly facing threats following his recent remarks about alleged links between the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and the proscribed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), raising fresh concerns about the safety of journalists covering militancy and sensitive security issues.
According to DND reports, Aqeel Yousafzai is known for his reporting and research on militancy, regional security and Afghanistan affairs. He has authored several research papers and books, including War Theatre, which examines conflict, militancy and political instability in Pakistan and the broader region.
In recent interviews, Yousafzai has discussed what he described as longstanding political and ideological connections involving religious-political networks and militant groups operating in the region. His comments have reportedly drawn strong criticism from figures associated with JUI-F.
According to the report, Yousafzai alleged that three former TTP leaders had previously been associated with JUI-affiliated circles. He specifically referred to Baitullah Mehsud, Hakimullah Mehsud and Omar Khalid Khorasani, claiming that they had links with JUI before becoming prominent figures in militant organisations.
Yousafzai has also spoken about alleged connections between political, criminal, smuggling and militant networks along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. He has highlighted the security implications of cross-border militancy and the activities of groups operating from Afghan territory.
The report further claims that Yousafzai faced criticism after discussing an alleged meeting involving JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada. It says Yousafzai attributed certain claims about the meeting to information available to Pakistani security agencies. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Meanwhile, a video message attributed to Fazlur Rahman Khalil, a JUI-F figure, reportedly criticised Yousafzai and accused him of being anti-state and hostile toward the party. The report alleges that the remarks have contributed to concerns over the journalist’s safety.
The developments have renewed calls for journalists reporting on militancy, terrorism and political-security affairs to be provided adequate protection, particularly when their work involves allegations against influential political or militant networks.
