Despite tensions over trade tariff issues, the Indian and US militaries are conducting regular joint exercises.

According to the Indian Navy, the indigenously built guided missile destroyer INS Imphal participated in the Passage Exercise with the US Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Gridley in the Arabian Sea on September 29, 2025.

The exercise took place after the recently held Indo-US joint military exercise Yudh Abhyas 2025 in Alaska, USA. The exercise was attended by a battalion of the Madras Regiment of the Indian Army, while the Arctic Wolves Brigade Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division of the US Army also participated.

The two-week exercise covered heliborne operations, use of surveillance assets and drones, mountain warfare skills, casualty evacuation, medical assistance, and the integrated use of artillery, aviation, and electronic warfare.

India’s largest multinational naval exercise is scheduled for early next year on the east coast, in which the US Navy is also expected to participate.
