ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Police have arrested the prime suspect in the killing of Group Captain Asim Tariq within nine hours of the incident, Inspector General (IG) of Islamabad Police Ali Nasir Rizvi announced on Sunday.
Addressing a press conference, the IG of Islamabad Police stated that the case has been taken as a high-priority matter and an inquiry has been initiated immediately after the murder.
According to IG Rizvi, the incident took place at about 11 am, in which the accused, named Saad Abbasi tried to coax a woman to accompany him. However, the woman was reportedly unaware of the accused and refused to comply with his demands.
As per the IG, Group Captain Asim Tariq, while heading towards work, noticed the situation of the woman and made a U-turn to help her out. He reportedly asked the woman about the situation, identified himself and told the suspect to leave the woman alone.
Police officials stated that the Group Captain of Air Force has shown great courage by intervening in an abduction case. However, the suspect reportedly turned back on his motorcycle and started firing at him, resulting in his death.
With the help of forensic and investigatory methods, the Islamabad Police was able to arrest the accused Saad Abbasi, in just nine hours after the incident took place, according to IG Rizvi.
The accused is currently in custody, and the process for legal investigation is in progress.
The murder of Group Captain Asim Tariq has gained much popularity and attention due to the efforts that he made to save a woman from any kind of assault.
PAF Hero Asim Sacrifices Life to Save Woman
Earlier, Brave officer of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Group Captain Asim Martyred when he was rescuing a woman in the jurisdiction of Islamabad on Sunday. Group Captain Asim was passing through 9th Avenue when he saw a woman getting off a motorcycle, whose hand was being pulled by the motorcyclist there.
Group Captain Asim, being a responsible citizen, turned back and stopped near the motorcycle, on which the girl ran to the other side of the vehicle. Meanwhile, the alleged accused Saad started abusing Group Captain Asim and opened fire on him within moments.
Group Captain Asim succumbed to his injuries and died, while the accused fled the scene. According to the police, the woman has told that the accused was her office colleague, who had offered to take her to work with him.
However, he wanted to change the route to take her somewhere else. Group Captain Asim intervened in time and saved me, the woman identified as Nimra told the police. Soon after the incident, law enforcement agencies launched operations to arrest the accused.
The brave Group Captain Asim Shaheed leaves behind a widow, daughter and son among the mourners. His sacrifice is being paid tribute to across the country. He is being remembered on national and social media as a brave officer who sacrificed his life for the protection of women.
Group Captain Asim’s sacrifice is a reflection of the fact that the soldiers are not only the guardians of borders but also of honour.
