RAWALPINDI: Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been fined for maintaining slow over-rates during the opening match of the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series in Rawalpindi on Sunday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Monday.

Pakistan were fined 10 per cent of their match fees after being ruled two overs short of the required rate, while Sri Lanka received a five per cent fine for falling one over short. The calculations were made after time allowances were taken into account.

Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanctions under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offences.

Under the regulations, players are fined five per cent of their match fees for every over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time.

Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis pleaded guilty to the charges and accepted the proposed sanctions, eliminating the need for formal hearings.

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Asif Yaqoob and Wayne Knights, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Faisal Afridi.
