ISLAMABAD: Depression continues to be one of the key factors along with other diseases that the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified as a leading cause of global and national deaths, not to mention the deterioration of people’s quality of life.

The medical community strongly believes that almost 100% of people are going to one or another repetition of this cycle of depression in their lives, but fortunately, for many cases, effective treatments are available. Therapies such as in-patient treatment, outpatient therapy, treatments with drugs or without drugs, and counseling are some of the most common methods used.

The studies done on depression point at an angry disposition as the possible root cause. The person might not be ready to acknowledge it openly and rather choose to stay in denial; they would not want to accept that they are suffering from any sort of mental illness. In fact, at this very moment, they may be feeling resentful towards everybody and everything and thinking that they are the only ones suffering from such problems.

Mental health specialists say that the most important thing to do is to comprehend depression and confront it. It is the very point at which one either overcomes the problem of depression or succumbs to it.

The person, who gets depressed, might at first just withdraw slowly from socializing and later totally isolate himself and eventually may lose his job because of being unable to go to work. Others may even start contemplating death and suicide. This is the point when it is absolutely necessary for someone close to the affected person to force him/her to see a psychologist or psychiatrist for proper treatment.

The person in question has to be able to differentiate between the immaturity of feeling well able to manage on their own and the reality of the situation where they, by admitting, are actually on a step closer to the solution.
