Black salt has long been used in South Asian cuisine and is commonly added to drinks, juices and a variety of dishes. While it is often associated with several health benefits, experts caution that it should be considered part of a balanced diet rather than a treatment for any medical condition.

Salt intake is important for both taste and health, but excessive sodium consumption has been linked to a range of health problems. This has led many people to consider alternatives such as black and pink salt.

Black salt is traditionally believed to support digestion. Some traditional uses also associate it with improved bile production in the liver and better absorption in the intestines. The potassium present in black salt is an important mineral for muscle function, and its use is sometimes linked to muscle health and relief from muscle discomfort.

Besides sodium, black salt may contain small amounts of minerals such as iron, magnesium and calcium. However, it would not be accurate to consider black salt a major dietary source of these nutrients.

For people concerned about blood pressure, the overall amount of salt consumed remains important. Some recommendations mention limiting black salt intake to no more than 3.75 grams a day for people with high blood pressure, but the appropriate amount should be determined in consultation with a doctor or nutritionist.

Black salt is also sometimes promoted as beneficial for heartburn, acidity, acid reflux and inflammation. It is also claimed to help with weight loss. However, there is no basis for considering black salt a proven treatment for weight loss or reflux, and it should not replace a balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle.

Traditionally, black salt mixed with ginger and lemon juice has also been used as a home remedy for constipation. Similarly, adding black salt to lukewarm water and applying it to the skin is sometimes recommended for dry or dull skin.

However, people with sensitive skin should exercise caution when trying such home remedies, while those with medical conditions should seek professional advice rather than relying on black salt as a treatment.
