PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert to all district administrations following a forecast for rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across several parts of the province from August 29 to September 5.
According to the PDMA, rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected in Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, Bajaur and Kohistan.
The weather system is also likely to affect Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Khyber and Mohmand, with rain and thunderstorms expected in these areas.
From September 1 to 4, rain is forecast in Karak, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank and North and South Waziristan.
The PDMA warned that heavy rainfall could trigger landslides in vulnerable areas of the mountainous districts. It also forecast a risk of urban flooding in low-lying areas of Mardan and Swabi from August 31 to September 5.
Strong winds and lightning could damage weak structures, electricity poles, billboards and crops, the authority cautioned.
The PDMA has directed district administrations and relevant departments to take precautionary measures and remain alert. Tourists and travellers have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel in view of the anticipated weather conditions.
The authority also urged tourists to avoid trekking, hiking and camping during heavy rainfall and advised residents to stay away from streams, nullahs and rainwater channels. People have been warned against attempting to cross roads submerged by floodwater.
The public has further been advised to remain in safe locations during thunderstorms and strong winds.
