ISLAMABAD: Geo News on Sunday resumed its broadcast operations on Youtube and Cable Network after a 15-day suspension imposed by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).
The authority suspended the broadcast of Geo News for airing a Muharram documentary and that could offend religious sentiments and disturb public order. On Sunday, the channel went back on air after the suspension period expired. Moreover, Geo News is now also available as usual on cable networks and YouTube.
Besides the 15 days suspension order, the PEMRA imposed Rs. 10 million fine on the channel. Apart from that, the authority also ordered a lifetime ban on sacked employees in this incident. According to PEMRA, a detailed review was conducted on the issue of religious depictions in the broadcast of Geo News’ program “Safar-e-Ishq” on 10 Muharram-ul-Haram. Geo News and its representatives were also given an opportunity to explain the matter.
According to the PEMRA statement, the authority reviewed the recommendations of the Council of Complaints Lahore, the records of proceedings, the written and oral position of the license holder, as well as the relevant laws and codes of conduct in its 191st meeting held on July 11.
The statement said that the said violation was serious in nature, on which it was decided to suspend the license of Geo News for 15 days on June 27, 2026. According to PEMRA, the suspension period ended at 12 am on Saturday, after which the channel’s broadcasts were restored. After resuming its broadcast, viewers can watch Geo News live broadcasts and regular programs again through cable networks across the country, while online users can watch them on YouTube.
