ISLAMABAD: To create a central database of people involved in criminal activities, Ministry of Interior has decided to establish Pakistan’s first federal crime list, officials said.
As per media reports, the proposed database will bring together information on people wanted or involved in serious and organised crimes, allowing law-enforcement agencies to access criminal records through a centralised system.
The data will be collected and compiled at the Command and Control Centre of the National Police Bureau, with records from provincial police departments, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and other relevant institutions to be brought together.
The federal crime list will cover a wide range of offenders, including proclaimed and absconding criminals, terrorists, money launderers, human and drug traffickers, cybercriminals and those involved in financial fraud.
It will also contain details of members and office-bearers of proscribed organisations, along with individuals suspected of financing terrorism.
People involved in interprovincial and transnational organised crime, smuggling and other serious offences will also be included in the proposed database. Officials said the list would cover cybercrime and financial fraud cases, while a proposal was also being considered to include individuals involved in crimes related to begging.
The database is also expected to include records of people facing Interpol Red Notices and other international alerts, giving Pakistani authorities access to a wider range of information on individuals wanted in connection with crimes.
Another proposal under consideration is to assign a National Criminal Identification Number to every person placed on the federal crime list. The proposed number would be linked with an individual’s Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC), creating a single identification system that could help law-enforcement and investigative agencies track criminal records more efficiently.
