TEHRAN: Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran on Monday to participate in an important meeting on regional security.

According to Iranian state media and Arab News, Field Marshal Munir will attend the first high-level talks between Iran and the members of the Makkah Joint Defence Pact. The Makkah Pact was signed in August 2026 between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye, under which an armed attack on one member is considered an attack on all. The meeting in Tehran is being hosted by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Major General Mohsen Rezaei. The other participants include Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and Turkish Intelligence Chief Ibrahim Kalin. Field Marshal Munir is accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

Iran’s Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Bagheri Kani confirmed the meeting and said this four-country meeting can be an effective and important step in shaping an indigenous regional security framework in West Asia. He said the meeting was proposed during Field Marshal Asim Munir’s visit to Tehran last week. The talks are taking place amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. The region has seen war since February following US and Israeli attacks on Iran, escalating Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, and an ongoing US naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Pakistan is playing a key role as a mediator between Washington and Tehran to prevent a renewed military confrontation and to reduce tensions over the Strait of Hormuz. During his visit, Field Marshal Asim Munir is also expected to hold separate meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf to discuss bilateral relations and regional security developments.
