A report by the Spanish newspaper El País has revealed that Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir is playing a central role in preventing a direct military confrontation between the United States and Iran.
According to the report, Munir’s diplomatic efforts have been instrumental in resuming peace talks and de-escalating regional tensions. The report highlights that U.S. President Donald Trump recently announced the suspension of a planned military strike on Iran, citing a direct request from Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. President Trump reportedly praised Munir as a “great warrior” and a “favourite field marshal,” underscoring the extraordinary rapport between the two leaders.
The report said Asim Munir was elevated to the rank of Field Marshal following a significant military standoff with India in May 2025. Subsequently, through the 27th Constitutional Amendment in November 2025, he assumed the newly created position of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), consolidating command over all branches of the Pakistani armed forces.
The El País report notes that Munir’s influence extends into the diplomatic and economic spheres. He is the first Pakistani military commander to be hosted for a private lunch at the White House by a U.S. President. These high-level engagements have also paved the way for strategic economic agreements, including a partnership with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff regarding the redevelopment of the Roosevelt Hotel in New York and collaborations in digital finance. In his role as a mediator, Field Marshal Munir recently conducted a three-day visit to Tehran for meetings with the Iranian presidential and military leadership.
Analysts suggest that his background in intelligence and his unique access to both Washington and Tehran position him as a rare bridge between the two nations. With his expanded constitutional mandate, world leaders increasingly view Munir as a pivotal figure in regional stability and a key diplomat on the global stage
