PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has strongly criticised the provincial government, questioning its claims of transparency and asking how the bill granting official privileges was passed.
Speaking on the issue, the governor said the government had secured benefits for itself but failed to provide meaningful relief to the public.
He argued that at a time when the province faces multiple challenges, the priority should be effective governance, improved law and order, and better public services rather than additional privileges for officeholders.
Kundi said the provincial administration appeared unable to ensure the protection of citizens’ lives and property, while key sectors, including healthcare, education, and other essential public services, continued to suffer from neglect.
He further remarked that those who once demanded accountability for the use of taxpayers’ money were now themselves benefiting from official privileges, calling it a contradiction of their earlier stance.
The governor also criticised attempts to curb freedom of expression, describing such measures as inconsistent with democratic values. He urged the government to respect constitutional and legal principles instead of suppressing dissenting opinions.
Highlighting the constitutional process, Kundi said every bill passed by the provincial assembly is forwarded to the governor for consideration and noted that he had raised constitutional objections to several provincial bills in the past.
He stressed that transparency and adherence to constitutional requirements should remain central to the legislative process and urged the provincial government to prioritise resolving public issues, strengthening governance, and improving the delivery of basic services to provide tangible relief to citizens.
