A series of earthquakes in Venezuela have caused widespread damage, leaving dozens of buildings in rubble and the number of deaths and injuries feared to rise.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the first 7.2-magnitude quake struck on Wednesday evening, followed by a second powerful 7.5-magnitude quake less than a minute later. Severe tremors from the earthquakes were felt in various parts of the country, including the capital Caracas, causing panic among the people.

According to reports, several residential and commercial buildings have collapsed in Carcas and other affected towns, while a large number of people are feared to be buried under the rubble. Rescue teams are engaged in search and rescue operations in the affected areas.

Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez has declared the earthquake a national tragedy and declared a state of emergency in the country. According to officials, at least 32 people have been confirmed dead and more than 700 injured, but the death toll is expected to rise.

Officials say the capital’s central airport and other infrastructure have also been damaged, while power and communication systems have been affected in several areas. The international community has also offered aid to Venezuela.

According to preliminary estimates by the US Geological Survey, the death toll from the quake could reach thousands, but the final figure will be released after a full assessment of relief operations and damage.

Meanwhile, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake was also recorded in the northern parts of the US state of California, after which millions of people have been issued a precautionary alert.
