PESHAWAR: Drug addicts have allegedly been involved in stealing CCTV cameras, electricity meters, cables and other equipment in Hayatabad, one of Peshawar’s upscale residential areas, raising concerns among local residents over security.
Pictures purportedly showing suspects involved in the thefts have also circulated widely on social media.
In a recent incident at Bacha Khan Chowk, a man allegedly under the influence of drugs was caught attempting to cut an 11,000-volt electricity line in broad daylight.
Residents said similar incidents have been reported in different parts of Hayatabad, where CCTV cameras, electrical wires and other valuable equipment have allegedly been stolen. Images of individuals suspected of involvement in such thefts have subsequently appeared on social media.
According to residents, the problem extends beyond theft of public and private equipment. They alleged that drug users have also recently begun snatching mobile phones and other belongings from citizens.
The presence of such individuals has created increasing fear among the locals, especially the women and children, who apparently feel insecure while moving around.
Increased security measures and stringent action should be taken against the people indulged in theft and drug abuse to make Hayatabad a safe place again.
