ISLAMABAD: The Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Sohail Afridi has accused the government of giving one province priority over the others in the distribution of resources.
Speaking at a conference in Islamabad, Afridi claimed that Rs 4,758 billion is the amount of money that is owed by the federation. He was very critical about the inequality in the treatment of provincial governments, telling an anecdote of one minister being given funds while he himself was once stopped by a police officer outside Adiala.
The chief minister of KP went on to say that the situation of the country is like one of a borrower who keeps piling up debts; thus, for Pakistan, there is around Rs. 36 trillion as total liabilities.
Afridi was adamant that his administration would not let go its question and demand of its rights. Moreover, he said that the KP government is with the opposition in the matter of an independent judiciary and free media being restored as the latter is a condition for effective governance.
KP CM’s claims on NFC funds misleading, says federal government
Yesterday, the federal government has dismissed claims made by the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) regarding the distribution of National Finance Commission (NFC) funds, terming them “misleading” and contradictory to the official records.
Chief Minister has consistently accused his province is not getting the full NFC share and has pointed fingers at the central government for the poor state of governance in the province, the non-execution of development projects, the ongoing terrorism, and so on. Nevertheless, the official documents tell a different story.
Federal records reveal that KP has been given the full 100% of its NFC allotment. The total provision to the province since 2010 has been over PKR 8.4 trillion including federal transfers, NFC allocations, support programs and assistance for IDPs and newly merged districts.
The summary of federal payments to KP includes:
July 2010 – November 2025: PKR 5,867 billion as per the 7th NFC Award.
2010 and after: PKR 705 billion for the War on Terror (the extra 1% of the divisible fund).
July 2010 – November 2025: PKR 482.78 billion in direct transfers including oil and gas royalties and natural resource levies.
FY 2016–2025: PKR 481.433 billion under the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) for both unconditional and conditional cash transfers.
2019 onwards: PKR 704 billion for newly merged districts.
Various years: PKR 117.166 billion for IDPs.
December 17, 2025: PKR 46.44 billion released as two NFC weekly instalments.
This continuous financial backing shows that KP has not just got its complete NFC share but also has recurring support from the federal government in different measures.
The federal government said that these facts very clearly went against the Chief Minister’s assertions, which it characterized as politically charged and designed to shift focus away from the problems of government and the alleged corruption in the province.
