PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Prisons Department has appointed its first transgender employee, marking a historic moment for the province. The individual identified as Sobia, known by her alias ‘Bebo’, has been appointed as a warden in the jail police, becoming the first transgender person to join the department.
According to reports, Sobia Khan has been hired on scale 7 in a special appointment on account of being a transgender person. She will work as a jail warden either in the central prison or the appropriate headquarters, according to the requirements of the department.
This is one of the efforts made by the government towards ensuring inclusiveness and equal opportunity among public servants. As per a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Prisons Department, the step is an initiative taken in this direction where everyone gets a chance to participate equally in social progress.
The employment of Sobia Khan is viewed as an indication of hope for the transgender community, since it represents progress towards the demolition of societal discrimination against transgender people. Transgender rights activists within the nation have always been pushing for greater representation in various fields of public service, and this move is considered to be a success in that struggle.
Social scientists and cultural anthropologists have maintained that such efforts are fundamental in breaking down the stigmas attached to transgender people, which will contribute to the establishment of an equal society.
