KOLKATA: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and West Bengal state assembly opposition leader, Suvendu Adhikari, has faced backlash for his provocative comments in which he said that Bangladesh should be given the same “lesson” Israel has taught Gaza.
Adhikari made his statement while protesting in Kolkata in front of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission. He further claimed that the Hindu minority in Bangladesh is the Indian government’s responsibility to protect.
The politician also alluded to “Operation Sundor” in Pakistan and indirectly suggested a similar action for Bangladesh.
The ruling Trinamool Congress party condemned the action as extremely dangerous, highly irresponsible, and inciting hatred, while at the same time warning that this kind of talk could further aggravate regional tensions.
Indian news reports say that Adhikari’s statements have now created a public discourse on India-Bangladesh relations to the extent that the opposition parties started accusing the BJP of trying to gain votes by playing with the sensitive regional issues.
