Apple has confirmed that a cellular connectivity issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network can cause devices to lose service, preventing calls, text messages and mobile data from working.
The company said it has released software and carrier updates designed to prevent additional devices from being affected. However, iPhone 18 Pro Max units that have already experienced the issue cannot be restored through a software update and must be replaced.
Apple released iOS 27.0.1 earlier this week and issued an AT&T carrier settings update on Friday as part of efforts to prevent the problem from occurring. The company strongly recommends that all iPhone 18 Pro Max users install iOS 27.0.1.Users can check for the update by opening Settings > General > Software Update.
The AT&T carrier settings update will automatically reach affected users over the next 14 days, according to Apple. Users can also manually check for the update by going to Settings > General > About.
Apple said the software and carrier updates are intended to prevent the cellular issue from affecting additional devices. However, the company said devices that have already lost cellular service because of the problem cannot have their service restored through an update.
Affected customers have been advised to contact Apple Support or AT&T, or visit an Apple Store or AT&T location. The company did not specify the underlying cause of the problem. Apple said it has so far observed the issue only on the iPhone 18 Pro Max when connected to AT&T’s network. No other iPhone models or mobile carriers are currently known to be affected, according to the company.
The issue has prompted thousands of complaints across Apple’s Support Community and other online platforms.US versions of the iPhone 18 Pro Max use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 modem, while models sold in other countries use Apple’s custom C2 modem. Apple has not indicated whether the difference in modem hardware is connected to the AT&T-specific problem.
It is also unclear whether Apple will launch a dedicated service programme for the issue. For now, affected customers are advised to contact Apple or AT&T to arrange a device replacement.
