A six-day polio booster campaign has been launched in selected areas of Peshawar and Khyber district affected by the poliovirus, targeting more than 1.11 million children aged between four months and 10 years.
According to the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), the campaign is being conducted in 48 designated union councils to strengthen children’s immunity against polio and help prevent the further spread of the virus.
A total of 1,728 trained teams and 1,383 social mobilisers have been deployed across Peshawar and Khyber district to administer booster doses and raise awareness among parents about the importance of vaccination.
In Khyber district, the campaign will cover 30 designated union councils, with more than 211,000 children targeted for vaccination. The district has been allocated 700 trained teams and 594 social mobilisers to support the campaign.
Polio teams will visit homes, schools, seminaries, healthcare facilities and community vaccination centres to ensure children receive the required doses. Children aged between five and 10 years in selected areas of Peshawar and Khyber will also be given polio drops during the campaign.
The EOC has urged parents to cooperate with vaccination teams and ensure their children receive the vaccine.
Polio is a contagious disease that can cause permanent disability in children. Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect children against the disease, while booster campaigns in affected areas aim to strengthen immunity and reduce the risk of virus transmission.
