PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police have cautioned families against the potential misuse of wedding photographs and videos, warning that cybercriminals could exploit personal footage to blackmail individuals and their relatives.
In a security advisory issued ahead of the winter wedding season, police urged citizens to exercise greater care when recording wedding ceremonies, particularly when capturing images and videos of female family members.
Growing Concerns Over Digital Blackmail
According to police officials, criminals may manipulate personal photographs and videos or use artificial intelligence to create fabricated and deepfake content. Such material could then be used to threaten victims, extort money or pressure families into meeting unlawful demands.
Officials warned that perpetrators might threaten to circulate private or manipulated content on social media, potentially causing emotional distress and damaging the privacy and reputation of those affected.
Wedding Season Brings Privacy Concerns
With wedding celebrations increasing during the winter months, police have stressed the need for greater awareness about the risks associated with recording, storing and sharing personal footage.
Families have been advised to remain vigilant when hiring photographers and videographers and to exercise caution when allowing photographs and videos to be shared through digital platforms.
The advisory also highlights the importance of restricting access to personal content and avoiding the careless distribution of sensitive images and recordings.
Police Urge Responsible Sharing
Authorities have called on citizens to adopt safer digital practices to protect their families from online exploitation. They stressed that wedding photographs and videos should be handled responsibly to minimise the possibility of unauthorised access, manipulation or circulation.
The police urged the public to remain alert to cybercrime threats and take preventive measures to safeguard personal privacy during wedding festivities.
