ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has received a liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo from Qatar, marking the second shipment from the Gulf state to arrive in October, according to sources in the Ministry of Energy.
The sources said gas supply to the system had begun from the newly arrived cargo, helping meet the country’s energy requirements.
They added that Pakistan had received two LNG cargoes from Qatar so far this month.
According to the Ministry of Energy sources, the government is making every effort to avoid purchasing expensive LNG cargoes from the spot market. They said LNG shipments received under the existing agreement with Qatar cost approximately half as much as those purchased from the spot market.
Under the contractual arrangement, Qatari LNG costs between $14 and $15 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), while prices in the spot market can reach $30 per MMBtu, the sources said.
The price difference highlights the importance of long-term supply agreements in helping Pakistan manage LNG procurement costs amid fluctuations in international energy markets.
