DURBAN: Australia’s four-man bowling attack has achieved a historic milestone in Test cricket, with Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon collectively surpassing 600 wickets to establish a remarkable record.
The quartet reached the milestone during the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead, taking their combined tally to 602 wickets across 38 Tests played together, according to the statistics cited in the report.
This is one of a kind performance for a four-bowler combination in Test cricket, which has a history of almost 149 years.
As per the quoted numbers in the report, the second-best four-bowler combination in Test cricket includes England’s Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes, who have 430 wickets together. Third best among them are South Africa’s Jacques Kallis, Makhaya Ntini, Nicky Boje and Shaun Pollock, who have 341 wickets together.
Among the four bowlers from Australia, Cummins is the top-performing bowler with 158 wickets. Starc follows him in terms of the wickets’ numbers with 155 wickets. Hazlewood has 150 wickets, while Lyon has accounted for 139 wickets.
Each of them brings something special to the table.
Same Runs, Same Balls: Labuschagne Makes Test History
Meanwhile, Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne has achieved a rare statistical feat in Test cricket after scoring identical runs off the same number of deliveries in both innings of a match.
Labuschagne scored 37 runs off 58 balls in each innings, registering his name in a unique category of Test cricket records.
As per available statistics, this is only the second time that something like this has ever happened in Test cricket where batters scored at least 20 runs from more than 20 balls in each innings.
The last time something similar had occurred was in the 1977-78 season when the Indian wicket-keeper batter, Syed Kirmani, made 29 runs from 62 balls in each innings of the Test against Australia in the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
It is another odd record added by Labuschagne in the history of Test cricket.
