PESHAWAR: Renowned Pakistani actress and producer Hareem Farooq has come under fire on social media for her choice of outfit during a promotional visit to the Punjab University.
The actress, along with actor Faisal Qureshi, visited the university campus on Tuesday as part of the promotional campaign for her upcoming Punjabi film ‘Mango Jatt’. The visit was aimed at engaging with students and building hype for the film ahead of its release. For the appearance, Hareem wore a loose, bright yellow shirt paired with denim jeans. Photos and videos from the event quickly went viral on Instagram and Facebook, triggering a debate among netizens. What Triggered the Criticism? A large section of social media users termed her attire “inappropriate” for an educational institution. Their argument was that universities have a formal academic environment and celebrities visiting such places should be more mindful of their dress code.
One user commented, “There is a dress code and decorum for every place. What you wear to a concert cannot be worn to a university.”Another user wrote, “Artists are role models for youth; they should choose their dress keeping in view the nature of the place.”Some users also raised questions about the fit and style of her jeans and shirt, calling it too casual for a public university event.
While much of the initial criticism was about the dress code, a number of comments crossed the line into personal attacks and body-shaming. Many users targeted Hareem’s physical appearance, which was condemned by others. Supporters of the actress came to her defense, stating that criticism of clothes is one thing, but targeting someone’s body is unacceptable.
They said that instead of focusing on her work and her film, people are unnecessarily judging her outfit. So far, Hareem Farooq has not responded to the criticism. The actress is known for her confident personality and has previously spoken about body positivity and trolling on social media.’Mango Jatt’ is her upcoming Punjabi project and the team is currently on a promotional tour across colleges and universities in Punjab.
