Australia has included 34-year-old batter Nic Maddinson in the squad for the three-match Test series against South Africa, bringing him close to playing Test cricket again after nearly a decade.
Maddinson underwent treatment, including chemotherapy, after being diagnosed with testicular cancer last year. He had been unable to play first-class matches since then; however, his recent form paved the way for his comeback.
The left-handed batter scored a century in the One-Day Cup last week and has also been appointed captain of New South Wales for the current season. Maddinson played three Tests for Australia in 2016 but has not featured in the format for nearly ten years.
Wicketkeeper Sam Harper has also been included in the squad alongside him. Josh Inglis has been ruled out of the first Test due to a fractured finger, so Harper has been added as a backup to Alex Carey.
The first Test between Australia and South Africa is set to begin in Durban on October 9. Meanwhile, the Australian management is also monitoring the fitness of Cameron Green, who is suffering from abdominal discomfort.
