Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has welcomed China’s support for the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and called on the US to honor its commitments under the agreement.
“I appreciate President Xi Jinping’s thoughtful and responsible support for a return to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and for resolving differences through dialogue and diplomacy,” Pezeshkian wrote in a post on X on Friday.
“Iran shares this approach and underscores the importance of returning to that understanding, honoring the commitments already agreed upon, and creating the conditions necessary for serious, substantive, and results-oriented negotiations to move forward,” he added.
Pezeshkian also pointed to Tehran and Beijing’s shared emphasis on national sovereignty, de-escalation, and regional peace and stability.
During his summit with US President Donald Trump on Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on Washington to respect the June agreement with Iran and return to the diplomatic path outlined under the understanding.
China had already called for the restoration of the Islamabad framework earlier this month, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi telling his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on September 16 that Beijing encouraged both sides to return to the MoU and resume negotiations on the basis of agreements already reached.
Tehran has, meanwhile, presented a concrete diplomatic proposal to Washington, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announcing on Friday that Iran had conveyed a seven-day plan through Qatar for ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
“We have introduced a plan to the United States through the intermediaries that if certain conditions are met, the strait will be open in seven days,” Araghchi told reporters in New York.
The Iranian foreign minister added that the proposal would take effect once Washington accepted its conditions, making clear that Iran would not accept “coercion, threats, or intimidation.”
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned that Tehran will respond “strongly and resolutely” if the United States seeks to continue its war of aggression.
The MoU was signed on June 17 following Pakistani and Qatari mediation and established a framework for ending the latest round of aggression against Iran, which began on February 28 when the US and Israel attacked hundreds of targets across Iran and assassinated several Iranian officials, including the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran’s Armed Forces began striking US and Israeli assets across the region with barrages of drones and missiles, inflicting heavy losses on the aggressors.
Following the agreement, Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz, which it had closed to US and allied vessels during the war.
Not long after the signing of the MoU, the US imposed an illegal blockade on Iranian ports, prompting Tehran to close the strategic waterway once again.
