ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert warning of heavy rainfall and possible flooding in upper parts of the country from today through September 30.
According to the NDMA, the intensity of a westerly weather system is expected to increase on September 25 and 26, bringing thunderstorms and rain to upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Islamabad.
The NDMA has warned of the possibility of flash floods in mountainous areas and a sudden increase in water level in streams and nullahs.
The areas vulnerable to floods in Gilgit Baltistan include Astore, Skardu, Roundu, Ghanche and Shigar while Azad Jammu and Kashmir including Neelum Valley, Haveli, Poonch and Sudhanoti can also be at the risk of flooding.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts of Swat, Bajaur, Lower & Upper Dir, Kohistan, Battagram and Mansehra are also vulnerable to flooding.
Thunderstorms, heavy rains and isolated hailstorms likely in Potohar, Punjab and different areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa till September 30 according to the NDMA’s advisory.
NDMA has instructed concerned authorities to undertake all advance preparations, arrange emergency response teams and necessary resources besides continuous monitoring of rainfall and river/stream/ nullahs situation.
