PESHAWAR: Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) has taken epidemic form in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, affecting livestock across the province.
According to the Livestock Department, the disease has spread to 28 districts of the province. Focal Person of the Livestock Department, Dr. Hamid Kamal, said that 1,440 cases of Lumpy Skin Disease have been reported so far in the province.
He confirmed that 80 cattle have died due to Lumpy Skin Disease in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Dr Hamid Kamal said that Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Dir are the worst affected by Lumpy Skin Disease.
In Peshawar alone, 88 cases of Lumpy Skin Disease have been reported, he added. Dr Hamid Kamal said that vaccination and an improved sanitation system will be required to protect cattle from Lumpy Skin Disease. He said that an awareness campaign is underway among farm owners to prevent the spread of the disease.
The Livestock Department has urged farmers to immediately report any symptoms, including fever, nodules on the skin, and reduced milk production, and to isolate affected animals to stop further transmission.
The department also said that teams have been dispatched to the affected districts for vaccination and spray drives.
