YouTube has introduced a new privacy feature for users who share televisions, allowing them to protect their individual profiles with a four-digit PIN.
YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said the new Profile Lock option is being rolled out globally. The feature prevents other people using the same TV from accessing a locked profile.
Once enabled, other household members will not be able to view the user’s subscriptions or alter their video recommendations. Users can activate Profile Lock by opening the YouTube app on their TV, accessing the navigation menu on the left and going to Settings.
The profile lock must be set up separately on each device. Users who access YouTube on multiple TVs or other devices will therefore need to enable the lock individually on each one.
The feature also allows users to unlock their profile through the YouTube app on their mobile phone, meaning they do not have to enter the four-digit PIN using the TV remote every time. This option requires the relevant notification feature to be enabled.
Users who forget their PIN can select the “Forgot password” option on the TV screen and use their Google Account details to regain access to the profile. They can also set a new lock code during the process.
