ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified former National Assembly members Zartaj Gul, Sahibzada Muhammad Hamid Raza and Abdul Latif for failing to submit their statements of assets and liabilities for the financial year 2024-25.
The ECP has also issued a written order detailing the decision.
As per the ECP, these three former lawmakers would be disqualified till they submit their statements of assets and liabilities.
It was stated by the ECP that their disqualification does not allow the three people from contesting general elections, by-elections, Senate elections and local government elections in the period of disqualification.
Requirement of Asset Declaration
Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017 requires the members of Parliament to submit an annual statement containing their assets and liabilities along with their spouses and dependent children to the Election Commission.
The statement for the financial year 2024-25 has to be submitted till December 31, 2025.
In the past, the ECP had mentioned that the names of those lawmakers whose statements were not filed would be announced on January 1. Their memberships would be suspended from January 16, should there be no filing of the required statement till January 15, rendering them incapable of functioning as lawmakers.
This move will not be restricted to only the three lawmakers. The ECP reinstated the memberships of 73 lawmakers back in January 2026 after they provided their statements regarding assets and liabilities.
The disqualification of Zartaj Gul, Sahibzada Muhammad Hamid Raza, and Abdul Latif will stay in effect till they provide their outstanding asset statements.
