PESHAWAR: Instagram has announced stricter action against accounts that appear to belong to real people but are actually fictional characters created using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Social media users have been raising increasing complaints about this issue. Many users said they thought a profile belonged to a real person, only to later discover that the person did not exist at all and their photo or identity was generated by AI.

Instagram said it will not completely shut down such accounts. Instead, it will change the label to make their identity clear. The current ‘AI Creator’ label will be replaced with ‘AI Generated Profile’.

According to Instagram, accounts that feature fictional AI personalities and do not have the proper label will also have their reach limited. As a result, their posts will be shown to fewer users. The company said the change was made following feedback from users.

Instagram began testing the ‘AI Creator’ label earlier this year to address the growing trend of AI-generated fictional characters and profiles on the platform. With the new policy, Instagram aims to help users understand whether the profile they are seeing belongs to a real person or is a fake identity created by artificial intelligence.
