LONDON: British politician and former brother-in-law of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, Zac Goldsmith, has appealed to the Commonwealth to intervene over what he described as concerns surrounding Khan’s treatment and alleged injustices.
Goldsmith has written a formal letter to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, urging the organisation to raise the matter with the Pakistani government.
Sharing the text of his letter on social media platform X, Goldsmith confirmed that he had called on the Commonwealth Secretary-General to make urgent representations to Islamabad regarding the concerns surrounding Imran Khan and what he described as alleged injustices against the former premier.
In the letter, Goldsmith said Imran Khan is the father of his nephews and described him as a highly respected former brother-in-law with whom he and his family have maintained a close and affectionate relationship.
Goldsmith also praised Khan as a principled and great leader, claiming that the former prime minister remains a source of hope for millions of people.
The intervention comes as efforts continue from Khan’s supporters and allies to draw international attention to his legal and political situation and seek greater international pressure for his release.
