PESHAWAR: In order to facilitate locals and improve delivery of government services, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cabinet has formally approved the establishment of Umarzai as a new tehsil in district Charsadda.
The decision was taken during the 57th meeting of the Provincial Cabinet and announced by Minister for Information, Science and Technology Shafi Jan while briefing the media on the cabinet’s decisions.
The cabinet also constituted a committee comprising representatives of the Board of Revenue, Local Government, Planning and Development, and Finance departments to formulate criteria for future changes to administrative units.
The committee will develop guidelines for the creation or alteration of divisions, sub-divisions, tehsils and sub-tehsils, ensuring that such decisions are based on public interest and administrative requirements. Charsadda district, a fertile and historically significant region in Peshawar Division, was granted district status in 1998. Before that, it functioned as a tehsil of disrtict Peshawar.
According to official administrative data, Charsadda currently comprises three tehsils Charsadda, Tangi and Shabqadar. With the cabinet’s latest approval, Umarzai will become the district’s fourth tehsil.
The creation of the new tehsil is expected to provide a more focused administrative structure for the area and bring government services closer to local communities.
According to the latest national census, Charsadda has a population of 1,835,504. The district is also known for its fertile agricultural land and rich historical heritage, with its history closely associated with the ancient Gandhara civilisation.
