ISLAMABAD: Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi have departed for Iran.
According to ISPR, the visit aims to advance Pakistan’s efforts for regional peace and stability. ISPR said Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir is visiting Iran as part of Pakistan’s efforts to promote regional peace and stability. During the visit, focus will be on efforts for a peaceful, sustainable and comprehensive resolution to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei had said on Sunday that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir would visit Iran on Monday, where important meetings will also be held.
According to Iranian state media IRNA, Baghaei said the purpose of the visit is to further strengthen bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Iran. He added that Field Marshal Asim Munir’s visit is a continuation of Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace and security in the region.
The spokesperson said matters of mutual interest and promotion of bilateral cooperation, among other important issues, will be discussed during the visit. It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan played a key mediatory role between the US and Iran during the war and remained in close contact with both sides.
The US and Iran had signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 and started negotiations for a final agreement. However, the talks later stalled due to differences over issues including security guarantees and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Between July 8 and July 24, the US and Iran also carried out attacks against each other. The US targeted various sites in Iran, while Iran retaliated by targeting US military installations and assets in several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
