PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a weather alert, forecasting further rain, strong winds and thunderstorms across several parts of the province from Friday evening/night through August 23.

According to the advisory, rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected in both the upper and plain districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The upper districts which are expected to face rains are Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, Bajaur and Kohistan while plain districts where rainfalls are predicted include Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Charsadda, Nowshera, Kohat, Kurram and Hangu.

The PDMA has warned about the chances of urban flooding in low lying areas of Mardan and Swabi while landslides can occur in vulnerable mountainous regions.

The PDMA has warned about the possibility of damage to vulnerable structures including electricity poles, billboards, and solar panels due to gusty winds and thunderstorms. Vulnerable districts have been advised to take precautionary measures while keeping themselves prepared with the rescue team and all necessary equipment in case of any emergency situation.

Authorities have also been asked to keep a continuous watch on rivers, streams and rainwater channels and take necessary action in case of flooding and landslides.

PDMA has suggested that citizens avoid traveling during the rainy season and not come near rivers, streams, and other water bodies.

Citizens have been specially instructed not to expose their children to the danger of streams, ponds, and other water channels during and after the rain.

During the thunderstorm, citizens have been instructed to avoid coming into contact with exposed electric wires and appliances and remain inside safe buildings.

Citizens have been told to be vigilant and careful about the weather alerts issued by the government. Citizens can call the free emergency weather helpline of PDMA on 1700 for weather emergencies.
