SHANGLA: The National Highway Authority (NHA) has issued five-day notices to shopkeepers operating near the old Alpuri Bridge, paving the way for construction of a new steel bridge at the site.
The notices direct shop owners to remove their shops within five days. Construction of the new bridge is expected to begin after the area is cleared.
According to local sources, the existing Alpuri Bridge dates back to the era of the Wali of Swat and has served as an important route for traffic in the region for decades. However, the structure has deteriorated significantly, with cracks reported at several points.
The deteriorating condition of the bridge has raised safety concerns among local residents and commuters, who fear that continued use without rehabilitation could result in a serious accident.
Local traders have expressed their willingness to cooperate with the NHA’s construction plans. Shopkeepers said they were prepared to vacate their premises if work on the new bridge is set to begin.
However, they urged the authorities to start construction immediately after the shops are cleared to prevent unnecessary financial losses caused by prolonged disruption.
Residents have welcomed the NHA’s decision and called for the new steel bridge to be completed within the stipulated timeframe. They also urged authorities to make effective alternative traffic arrangements during construction to minimise disruption for commuters.
The Alpuri Bridge is considered a key transportation link in central Shangla. Residents say replacing the aging structure with a new bridge would improve road safety and strengthen connectivity for local communities and travellers.
Locals have expressed hope that the notices will lead to practical action rather than remain a procedural step, and that construction of the new bridge will begin without further delay.
