ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Finance on Thursday presented details of the country’s debt in the Senate session, chaired by Presiding Officer Manzoor Kakar.

According to Express News, the Ministry of Finance informed the House that Pakistan’s total debt stood at Rs 81,374 billion as of December 2025.The ministry stated that the government’s domestic debt was Rs 55,363 billion, while foreign debt stood at Rs 23,166 billion.

It was further revealed that Pakistan obtained Rs 2,845 billion in loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The Finance Ministry said the government paid a total of Rs 32,239 billion in interest on loans between 2021 and the fiscal year 2026. During the same period, from 2021 to 2026, the government repaid a total of Rs 102,780 billion in loans.

The debt figures were presented during the Senate proceedings as lawmakers discussed the country’s fiscal situation and borrowing.

The government argues that debt repayment and interest costs reflect past borrowings, while current policy focuses on revenue generation and reducing new borrowing. Opposition members often cite the rising debt burden as a key economic challenge.
